To the best of my knowledge, night-vision cameras are not part of the Mars rover's standard instrumentation package. Taking pictures at night with an ordinary camera gives you pitch black shots; not much use for scientific study.

Besides, the rovers themselves are solar powered. They have power in daylight and only within a few dozen degrees of the Martian equator where the sunlight is strong enough.

The modules on Mars that take the photos power down every night. When the sun rises they power up again. They are run by solar energy.

Listen up, OK?
Weight restrictions have made us all darn lucky to have gotten a probe to Mars, in the first place.
The added weight of a strobe flash (even a tiny one, similar to what are in cell phones right now), would have been prohibitive.
What can you see in a snapshot taken on Earth (at night) without a flash?

I thought so.

If you want to see *anything* clearly, you shine a light on it. Why deliberately take pictures of things in the dark?

You can easily find pictures of all the surface of Mars. But perhaps I've missed your point?

What's to see in the dark? Not much, so why waste time on taking pictures of the dark?
