I have never tried to crochet before, and I'm having a hard time with fairlythin yarn. I'm using 5mm crochet hook...tips?

With a 5mm hook I find that worsted weight 4 ply is a good weight. It's your basic mid-level weight combined with a mid size hook.
It's actually easier to use worsted weight with maybe a 6 or 7 mm hook. Then the yarn is a bit thicker but your hook is even bigger.

Good luck and welcome to crocheting.

I like working with worsted weight (4 ply).
Try a J size hook.

I think when I started, it was easier to learn with this yarn than it was with fine yarn (baby, sport) or thread.
The hook size also needs to be tailored to your liking. Some people above me have stated a H size hook for worsted weight but I really need to use a J to be comfortable.
Unless you are making clothes, the gauge doesn't need to be matched - that's just how much yarn they used with what they did. Say for an afghan, you may use more or less depending on how you like to crochet and what size hook you like to use. Just because a pattern recommends an H doesn't mean you have to use that size. I find it's hard to grab the yarn with an H with how I crochet.

I too had trouble with the worsted weight yarn and the 5 mm hooks. I found I love the yarn that is called "Thick and Quick" with a size K hook which is a 6.5 mm hook. It i easier to hang onto.

When you choose your yarn, try not to get a color that is too dark like black or navy as they are harder to see the stitches in as well.

Hope this helps and remember to use www.lionbrandyarn.com for additional instructions and tons of free patterns.

Good Luck!

I learned to crochet 45 yrs ago with fine cotton and a #10 crochet hook. I think if you get yourself a book to consult when you have a problem, it is worth its weight in gold. You should check out your local library. They have a great selection and also pattern books. When you find one you like, you could get one at a bookstore. Don't give up! BTW, don't do it when you are tired or you will make mistakes and get overly frustrated. Good luck!

you need to match the yarn with the hook. Try using a thicker yarn with a 5mm hook OR try using a thinner hook with your yarn. I'm positive this will make it easier for you
