i have done this once or twice before so i know what im doing only this time it will not start the power cables are right the battery connect is good every thing in the distributer is good and i have gas in it it does turn over but will not fire or start PLEASE HELP OH SORRY IT IS A 1991 NISSAN STANZA 4 BANGER

With or without a Chilton's or Haynes shop manual I can offer the following. If we get past this, you may have to buy a book on the car.

If I were to tackle this problem I would proceed as follows:

1. Have a friend check all your work. Fresh eyes can sometimes see things we miss.

2. Isolate the various systems.
... The starter turns the engine. That is 1/4 of the problem gone.
... Open the intake by removing the air cleaner. This insures the engine has air. If it starts your air cleaner is plugged.
... Spray some starting fluid into the intake. If it starts, even for a second, it is a fuel problem. Check fuel pressure and volume. Fuel injected cars use fuel pressure for atomization. If no fuel, the pump is either not connected or it died.
... Pull a spark plug wire and try for an arc to ground test. Use an old plug or a screw driver and subdued lighting to check for a spark. You have to have a ground for it to arc to. Failure is an ignition problem.

All you have to remember is two things. First the engine needs to turn over, have fuel, air, and correctly timed spark to run. It needs compression as well but I doubt you removed any pistons. Second, although rare, coincidental problems do occur.

If your engine turns over properly then it’s not the starter. Look for other causes fuel, ignition, etc. You can check for spark by removing one spark plug wire and using an inexpensive spark indicator attached to it, $2 or $3 at an auto parts store. If not check the dist. cap many times it’s a worn carbon brush that contacts the rotor but it may be anything relative. Fuel injected engines use an electric fuel pump. When you first turn the ignition switch on without cranking the engine you should be able to hear it turn on it may be bad, they fail quite often but once again it may be other things fuel related. There are many causes for an engine that won’t start but usually it’s either fuel or ignition problems given that it turns over fine.

Wow, i thought only i had a stanza, mine bit the dust bout 4 years ago, anyway i had a problem with mine starting, i replaced the plugs,wires,rotor, distributor cap and all, this did not help, turns out it was the distributor shaft.....Id get someone to check it, id hate to see you try and replace the shaft and it not work, but hope it helps some
ps...a car will start if you have fire and gas, check and see if your getting fire at your plugs, if so than your not getting gas....my then be a fuel pump....or other fuel related issues

first you need to check for spark. pull off a spark plug and wire and then hold next to a piece of metal on the engine. turn on the ignition and verify that you have a good arc between the plug and engine metal. you want spark, if no spark the check your coil. if you have spark then you need to verify fuel is getting to the rail. if you have both of these it should start. if not you may need to replace either yor crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor

If it is a manual trans. check the clulch switch. It's a safety device to keep you from starting the car when it's in gear.

first answer is funny...but true....my friend has a crap box car and i had to tap the starter with a screw driver all the time...hers is a manual trans...if the starter didnt work...we would pop the clutch...it was definitely a funny sight

check to see if you have compression
also
do a distributor test to see if you have any spark from the plug wires

it could be spark plugs or it could be that the valces are not opening at the right time so timing off

did you try tapping on the starter...even if its new maybe it messed up too? my dad did that before to an old car that he had.
