First off what is the pH of the water you will be using? It's usually a bad idea to try to modify the pH,because stability is more important than the actual pH. Look up kH,this is the important factor in pH stability. If you water is neutral(7.0 or higher) it should be OK,but the kH needs to be in the mid-range to provide stability. Guppies can get by in pH's as high as the low 8's without problems, but in this range the water change would have to be weekly or even more.

i have never kept them but like all fish some people find them hardy some don't the ideal pH for fancy guppies is 7 to 8 pH when you mean a new aquarium do you mean one that has been cycled or one that has not,the tank must be cycled before adding them and add 3 at a time ,once a week for 2 weeks.
stable pH is more important rather that trying to get the right pH my pH when i last tested it was 8 and i keep cichlids in 250 gallon tank ammonia and nitrite is more of a worry than pH,i have had my tank 2 years and test the pH every now and then but my nitrite and ammonia levels i test every 3 days .

My tap water here is 7.0 I never tried to adjust the ph up or down. I raised guppies like this for 15 years. You need a good aquarium book. Water chemistry is an involved subjeck that is why I reccoment a book. The ph can be affected by many things. Also don't try to adjust the ph to quickly.
Are your fish having problems? Are your tanks planted with live plants or all plastic. What type of fitleration do you have?
