Mr grumpy is right bt also wrong the actual phraseis much older and we will probably never have a totally accurate timeline on it.

The phrase was taken from a hit record entitled 'Respect' (1967) recorded by Aretha Franklin, which featured a chorus repeating 'Sock it to me' quite rapidly in the background.

The phrase 'to sock it to someone' originally meant 'to put something bluntly' (and was used as such by Mark Twain).

It was from a TV show in 1968 the main element used each week was schtick, a word or phrase repeated over and over until it became associated with a certain performer. Thus Judy Carne was best known for getting drenched every time she would say, "Sock it to me!

President Nixon also said it on one of their shows (a bit of trivia.... the 1st person who won 1 million$ on "who wants 2 b a millionaire"... won it by answering that question,....
