or for Mac
iMovie08 or Final Cut Express/Final Cut Studio which are the best their classes.
Adobe Premier also works on Mac.

I don;t know how frisky you want to get, but could get an Ubuntu Studio live CD.
It's everything you ever wanted and more (maybe too much more) but it is Linux, and and live CD linux can be painfully slow.

If you want to stick with the Windows (and you probably do,) then I would agree. Pinnacle is good if you want to just cut up some vids, add a sound track maybe throw in a few effects. You won;t be making a Hollywood blockbuster, but you can make your "Hi mom i'm vacation" stuff look top notch.

For the more professional stuff, Premier.

If you don't want to use Linux, and you don't want to spend ANY money, windows moviemaker 2.1 is probably the best option I'm afraid to say...

I'd go in for Pinnacle, and go ahead and get the capture/conversion box. That thing is VERY usefull. (Take all your old Vinyl and make CDs etc.)

One other really usefull tool is SUPER FEVER LINK

not an editor, but can create and and convert files from pretty much any form to any other.

Happy splicing!

A nice cheap one is NERO 8. It can do effects, chapters, and make menus. Try it free for 30 days on the company website. NERO 7 is also available for about $50.
