If the engine has almost 200,000 miles on it, it would probably be a bad idea to start doing 3 and 4 hundred dollar repairs to it.

If it is a high mileage engine, he may feel that it is not worth spending money repairing it. Maybe when it over-heated it cracked or damaged the block. Just ask him why he thinks you need a new engine. Maybe it is cheaper to get a secondhand engine than getting the head milled and polished and doing the same to the block.

Hi. You may have received addition heat damage if the block was near empty. A block maybe a good investment if you plan on keeping the car. The engine core will be new.

yes you can replace a head gasket

it could be smoking if coolant is spilling on the block check if you are losing coolant if you are then that could be the cause of the smoke

check if you are losing oil or coolant or if there is oil in you coolant or coolant in your oil
check for an unordinary smell in your exhaust if there is or any of the other factors i listed above then yes you have a blown head gasket and yes you can replace your head gasket

IF THERE ARE NONE OF THE SYMPTOMS LISTED ABOVE IT IS NOT A BLOWN HEAD GASKET THE MECHANIC IS TRYIN TO SCAM U IF NONE OF TEH THINGS LISTED ABOVE ARE HAPPENING

If it got so overheated that smoke came out, you've totally cooked it. The rings will be stuffed. I'd say a new engine would be a good idea.

unless you've destroyed the engine; just replace the head gasket.
