The two movies cover the same story from different angles. "Troy" is more about the Trojan war, the rivalry between the Greek hero Achilles and the Trojan hero Hector, and the fall of Troy. "Helen of Troy" (the old movie from the 50s, anyhow) romanticizes the relationship between Helen and Paris, the Trojan prince whose abduction of Helen started the war. Both movies take considerable liberties with the classical sources of the story.

The Roman Empire was about 1000 years in the future, though according to Virgil's Aeneid, the Trojans fled to Italy and founded Rome.

Helen of Troy & Troy are the same movie they just take the story and show it from their point of view. The Trojan war basically started because a prince of Troy stole the wife of a greek king. That's why it's said that Helen of Troy "had a face that launched a thousand ships"

I think I'd like to see Sophia Miles as Helen of Troy! Wouldn't you agree? EDIT: I do not agree with Twisted Sister!
