This is a section of biology that I personally found painful to learn,and to review it again will give me unpleasant flashbacks.
That being said,and barring the possibility that someone might give you a detailed explanation, here's a lead:
Look up "Alternation of Generations"
The dominant generation is different in lower plant (like mosses and ferns)forms as compared to higher (typical flowering plants)
life forms.
The generations alternate between the 2N (diploid) and N(monoploid) forms, one of which is the more obvious.
