Catherine (or Katharine) Howard was the fifth wife of England's King Henry VIII. She was the niece of the Duke of Norfolk by whose mother she was raised. She was also a cousin to Anne Boleyn (Henry's second wife.)

She was probably only about fifteen or sixteen when she married Henry - being a younger daughter of a minor noble, her exact birthdate is unknown.

The poor young girl was placed in a terrible position by her uncle, who hoped to benefit from his niece's marriage to the aging and probably impotent Henry. She knew that if she failed to provide Henry with a son she could expect to be divorced or even executed, as was her unfortunate cousin.

In order to get pregnant, she indulged in an adulterous affair, probably encouraged by others, which was discovered, and she was sentenced to death, probably in her eighteenth year.

Her stepdaughter, Elizabeth I, remembered her as a kind and gentle stepmother.
