First make sure the power is turned off. Then try smashing a potato down into the socket and turning it to get the rest of the bulb to unscrew.

During the daytime, so you have light!
Shut off the circuit breaker, or pull the fuse, connected with that part of the house.
You can experiment until you find the one that shuts that area off.
Then use needle nose pliers, with rubber insulated handles, with the room switch in the OFF position to reach into the socket and unwind the broken light bulb.
Probably ALL that is not necessary, BUT I sure as Heck would take those precautions!

1. Turn the power off to the socket.
2, Cut a potato in half.
3. Force the potato into the broken part of the bulb, once you start twisting it will come out and no one gets hurt.

The first, most important thing to do,is shut off the power to the source. If your electrical panel ( fuse box) , is not properly labeled, which is common, then you need to hit the fuse box and turn the switches into the " off position". After doing this, you can use a pair of pliers to remove the remainder of the light bulb.Twist the remainder of the bulb out of the socket. If it is rusted or, too difficult to remove, then you may need to call an electrician or perhaps ask a male neighbor help you or, a guy friend. I have had this happen to me twice and, I had to ask a guy neighbor to help. I hope that this helps.

VERY IMPORTANT--first turn off the electricity for the light fixture. Then get a pair of needle nose plyers and grab the outer rim of the broken light bulb and start unscrewing it. When it is out put in the new light bulb. Turn the electricity back on. This has worked for me. Good luck.

Always remember to turn the power off first! For large bulbs, remove glass shards and wedge a potato (cut in half) in to the socket. Use a carrot for smaller bulbs, also cut in half.

turn off the power, use another bulb to catch the threads of the old one, a potato sometimes works, or as a last resort, nose pliers. but once the threaded base starts turning, it usually comes right out.

The base is stuck (welded) to the socket. You probably won't be able to get it loose without getting up there with a pair of needle nose pliers. You could try shaping the end of the pole to wedge into the base and twist it out.
