Well, I was in class the other day, and our assignment was to give a persuasive speech about a specific issue.

To my surprise this girl gave a speech that claimed that country music listeners are more likely to commit suicide! I was appalled! I love country, and I haven't had any serious suicidal thoughts!

But her argument was very convincing, and there is a lot of research on the issue.

Any thoughts?

Yeah, I don't agree with it either. But she cited several studies that all sounded credible. But maybe she is just a persuasive person! haha.

And for those of you hating on contemporary country music, they all have the same topics as classic country music.

Country Music And Suicide

Sounds like a suspicious stat. What's a "country music listener," after all? Someone who only listens to country, or just someone who listens more to it than anyone else? In the study cited by your classmate, what was the sample size? Was it large enough to represent the whole population? And how did they screen for other factors besides music listening?

And of course, it's hard to use general conclusions to make any claims about an individual case. Just because 1000 people with short hair hate pepperoni pizza, that doesn't say anything about the dude with short hair who lives next door to me.

This higher-suicide rate argument could actually be made of many groups. Regardless of whether this claim has legitimacy or not I don't believe such a stat should be interpreted that a (one single) country music listener, such as yourself, is more likely to commit suicide than anybody else. If anything it would mean that the percentage of country-listener suicides AS A GROUP might higher be than the national average in general.

But that could also be said of many specific GROUPS of people ... and for many reasons.

i've heard the stuff they are trying to pass off as country music these days, if i had to listen to it very much, i would commit suicide as well.

these people aren't listening to any GOOD country music. like Hank III, Wayne Hancock, Railbenders, Jessie Dayton, Mojo Nixon, Eddie Spaghetti, Meat Purveyors, The Sadies, Two Dollar Pistols, Heavy Trash or Split Lip Rayfield.

Ain't that special.I've listened to country since the 50's and I've never had any sort of thoughts of suicide, though I have "killed" a few bottles of "Jack".

I disagree, is their scientific evidence to support her claim??? my parents have listened to country their whole lives and they dont contiplate suicide. my main genre of music is Rap, however I do like alot of country music, and I never think of suicide. Thats just like saying people that listen to Marilyn Manson are gonna go kill people, that is also a dim witted statement, and is not true! It sounds to me she just does not like the Country genre and is simply bashing it.

I find when I'm depressed that if I put in some good old country it makes me feel better, music is like therapy for me, its an upper not a downer.

That's the first I have ever heard of this. Rock music has more of an influence on suicide than any other music. Lyrics are even written in the songs praising you for killing your self and it has been proved that if you play some of Ozzy's stuff backwards on a turn table you can hear him saying kill kill kill. I have yet to hear of any country being tied into someones suicide. I really would have liked to hear more about how she came to this conclusion.

sounds like bs. They said the same thing about Ozzy.....anyone who suffers from depression can commit suicide no matter there musical prefernce. I found with me personally, when I am depressed and I pop in some Hank Sr or III it makes me feel better. Even though there is no one I can talk to around, they talk to me with there song. Letting me know they went through it and I can too. To me they help because I know they are there to help me get through it. So if you ask me, its boulderdash.

What a bunch of BS. Rap & Heavy Metal want to make me kill myself every time I hear it. Country is the best.
