Answer posted by 'johncob' regarding the 'Flick of the wrist' is pretty much correct.
However, no one seems to have mentioned the correct way to hold a hammer. Most novices will grasp the hammer handle by wrapping all five fingers around it. By placing the thumb along the top of the handle, better control of the hammer is achieved.
Similarly when using a handsaw. Instead of wrapping all five fingers around the handle, lay the index or forefinger along the handle's side. Again, much better control is achieved. Try it, but as someone else stated, 'practise makes perfect'.

How many people know how to use a hammer???? Precious few!!!!
The distance the nail goes in is not dependent on "How hard you hit it", but the speed of the hammerhead X the weight of the hammerhead at the point of impact.
Its all in the "Flick of the wrist". Try flicking your wrist... how fast did you do it? Try the same with your arm... slower, eh.
For practice, just take your hammer, and hit anything... get that wrist flick timed right, and you have the power!

Using the slimmest drill bit you've got, drill a shallow pilot hole. The pilot hole can be at any angle, depending on how you want your nail to go in. But whatever, the nail will always follow the pilot hole in a straight line.
