I have a windows vista operating system on an Acer computer. I keep getting alerts that my C: drive is full. So, I have deleted or moved almost all of my files. It will say that I have a bunch of space left, and then a few minutes later it will go back to saying I have none. This has been going on for a few weeks now. I have tried defragmenting that drive, I compressed it. I'm all out of things to try. Please help me!

Here is what is going on. Vista is using your hard drive for reserve memory every time you place a demand on your computer that requires more RAM than what you have. So this need for memory must go somewhere and that somewhere is your hard drive. The bottom line? Deleting files will not fix your problem except for a very temporary amount of time. The only way out of this problem is to buy more RAM as Vista requires lots of RAM. 2 Gigs minimum if you are using Vista Premium. Some company's are selling brand new computers with only 512 megs of Ram and they get by with that because Microsoft clams Vista will work with 512 megs on their Vista standard. Yeah right and I will sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.

I know you did not ask for my opinion, but I will give it anyway. Vista is a great OS if you have multiple core processors and lots of RAM on your computer. This is due to the fact that Vista is a multitasking operating system and needs all that horsepower. However, if your computer is only single core processor with 512 megs of RAM, then do yourself a big favor and install XP and on my word your computer will work so much better you will swear it is thanking you for it.

Just a guess but how about this?

Check out the virtual memory. I'm not sure how Vista handles it but if it is gobbling up disk space to use as virtual memory it could be flagging the drive as full. You will need to put a hard limit on the amount it can have instead of allowing the operating system from dictating how much it will take.

Add to the details, the disk size, available space you think you should have as well as the memory you have on the system. I would also be interested in whether you have sound and video on the motherboard as both will share memory with the computing functions and could drive the demand for virtual memory. Also is the VISTA you are running a legal copy or bootleg as bootleg software can do some very odd things to a system...

I accept email at my profile, feel free to contact me if you think I could be of any further help.

Why Don't You Try To Burn All Your Files Into A DVD, And Format The Computer, That Way A New Fresh Windows Vista You Will Have. By The Way If Your Move Files From One Folder To Another It Does Not Do Any Good!

Vista is a growing child, quit feeding it so much RAM. It's going to become a fatty. I'd just format and reinstall or install Linux
