yes Butter and oils will go rancid if exposed to light, heat or air. For this reason oil should be kept in a cool dark place( when in bottle ). As for butter and margarine if bought but not planning of using them quick, makes sense to freeze the quarter packs and take it to the refrigeration side as needed. For the same reason, all nuts (all have high oil content) should be kept refrigerated or frozen.
If butter has been kept under refrigeration, and there is no visible signs of melting or discoloration, should still be good for at least 5 to 6 months. But a taste test can always tell. If rancid, there is a sour smell in butter and the taste is strong and unusual.

I've never seen butter go bad. But I've seen plenty of it melt.

Yes it can go bad, if has real dairy products.
Many margarine products with artificial products can be sitting out for a couple of weeks.

Gets all melty
You can always tell if butter is bad (rancid) by a bitter taste that it gets...yucky bitter rancid butter....just taste test, if it tastes okay you can use it

yes it will get rancid if let our of the refrigerator, meaning the fat will oxidize and taste terrible. keep it in a colder area of the refrigerator even the door is too warm and it makes it not last that long and lose its delicious taste.

of course it melts, but also will not have the same teast , because butteh is a very senssetive food, it is effected by other smales which, for sure, is going to change its teast. also its color will be darker, that is all i know

i have left my butter out over night it was ok .

Its a dairy product. You should never leave dairy at room temp.

it can mold if left on the counter too long just keep checking on it and keep it covered
