Movies are made to appeal to the largest number of people possible and the mainstream (including Horror) movie audience abhors violence towards pets and little children.
If a child were to be horribly hurt or killed then the publicity from individuals and child welfare groups would affect profits and unfortunately nowadays that's what drives most of todays movies.

Its morally frowned upon to kill children and babies, especially if its quite visually done so.
The only reason they might kill off a child is to set into play the plot, or a series of events, etc.

Because killing kids and babies alienates audiences. Same with killing animals who are pets.
