Because when I learn something new I feel the need to change myself according to my new knowledge.
Most people would rather live in their own little existence and not be aware of other possible worlds of knowledge. I know many people who won't even consider discussing certain subjects. I think it is because they are afraid that they are wrong and people do not want to be proved wrong. Therefore, they continue on in bliss rather than having to use their brains and think. Or they would rather believe in lies and misinformation as long as it goes along with their own thinking, rather than searching out the facts.
Take AIDS/HIV for example.
Eugene has it right: Ignorance is bliss.
But, I believe in the old saying: Curiosity killed the cat, BUT satisfaction brought him back.

You mean why do so many people have disdain for what you call knowledge. I think the pursuit for answers to questions is ever present in everyone. Surely no one is satisfied completely with what they already "know".

Sadly, the youth of today have been raised in a society that doesn't care about anything anymore. Even college students act disrespectful and unexcited about learning. Some are so stuck on looking good, having a boyfriend or girlfriend, social status, and so on. They waste their lives away. Few people have that thirst for knowledge. mainstream society is an ignorant blank slate, highly susceptible to advertisement and commercialism. Those who see the problems in society usually separate themselves from it all and say let them die in their fancy clothes and with their twisted minds.

because the more they learn the more they realise they do not know everything... and that scares them. they would rather be ignorant and happy than knowledgeable and wise. knowledge scares them because there is so much of it...

but to be honest... i dont really now anyone with disdain for knowledge. there is knowledge everywhere... people would kill for knowledge (mafia) or work hard to send their children to school to become educated... people dont disdain knowledge... they just cant be bothered to be knowledgeable.. to them knowledge is worthless... to others knowledge is everything...

who knows? no one knows everything and i doubt everything is known by man

happy pondering =]

A lot of the times people tend to be afraid of what they don't know! Knowledge is power! And when people realize that they can be and learn anything as long as they have the will to they will succeed in life. But, what does it mean to succeed in life? It's all in the eyes of the beholder! I tell everyone to self teach! That's what I have done and still do! It;s faster then waiting for someone to teach you! So please join my pact and push knowledge!

Knowledge can disrupt a persons world view and therefore their world. This can be disturbing if the world view seems to "work."

If you mean why people dislike learning? then I would geuss people who don't like being honest with themselves, are the poeple who are afraid to face truth,so they don't bother learning new things, because when you learn new things, you learn new truths about things. Some people don't like change, they like living in their comfort zone an if they learn they need to make changes in life,it upsets their routine. So sad,but very true.
