this is a very involved question. If you want a simple answer, I would have to say that religion has had more of a positive impact.

In reality, what we have is a variety of circumstances that make this very messy to try to discuss. If you're talking about religion in terms of spirituality, that is one topic. However if you're talking about religion in terms of organized accepted religious institutions that is another situation altogether.

I guess for a relatively short answer it could be said that almost all religions are positive and their impacts are positive as well. However, this interpretation of religious writings and intentions have lead to extreme negative impacts. As a sociologist I am probably over analyzing your question, but this is quite a question. Ultimately I think the key issue here is the use of religion according to proper and improper interpretation of the religious writings that each particular religion is based on. If you look at the major dominant religions you will find that virtually all of them seek to in part peace happiness and love. I hope this gives you some idea.

Both.

Positive, because it gives so many people a peaceful feeling, a sense of belonging and safety, and a guideline for living a good, honest life when following God and the prophets teachings.

Negative, because people have decided that religion is a reason for war, for killing non-believers. If the people who are doing this just stop and read their respective holy books, they will realize their spiritual leaders have preached peace, forgiveness, the Golden Rule, and were nearly all very peaceful people themselves.

I firmly believe that religion has no negative effect on society. its the people who hide behind it using to manipulate other people that has the negative impact. Christianity - good. Crusades - bad, very bad.
Islam - good. Beating women in the streets because you see an ankle - Bad, very bad.
