You need the free DVDShrink program to rip 'most' dvds to your computer. For the rest you will need the free RipIt4Me program. Be sure to update the RipIt4Me program after you install it (update the FixItVS and DVD decriptor).
For most dvds. Put the dvd in the burner and wait for it to start and then cancel out anything or any player that pops up. Then open DVDshrink and click OPEN DISK. After about 2 minutes, Click BACKUP and browse to the folder you want to save the dvd files in. Click okay and the dvd will be ripped in 20-45minutes. When it's done, just open the folder you saved it in. There will always be an 'empty' Audio TS folder (it HAS to be there but you can ignore it). Click the VIDEOTS folder and then click the first VTS file and the movie will start playing. Sometimes you will have to stop the movie and go to the menu to start it from the begining but only sometimes.
For dvds that will NOT rip using dvdshrink, you open the RipIt4Me program. Click ONE-CLICK and it will do the rest! When it's done, it will automatically run dvdshrink and then you just click BACKUP and follow the above instructions. RipIt4Me will remove the CSS off the ones with new fangled copy protection (such as some Disney & Sony). You can watch your personal dvd collection using the backup you just made and you are NOT breaking any laws. Just don't share it! You LEGALLY can make ONE 'hard' backup onto a blank dvd (as long as you retain the original for proof of purchase). To burn to disk. Open your burning program (Sonic, Roxio, Nero, etc...) and drag the AUDIOTS & VIDEO TS folders to a blank DATA PROJECT and click BURN or COPY. Now you have a legal backup to play and save wear-and-tear on your original disk. However, if you have a backup with NO original disk, you would be breaking a specific law that is not upheld on a personal use level. If you use Limewire, store your movies in a folder that you DO NOT share with other Limewire users. As those who download movies off Limewire are NOT breaking any laws; those who ALLOW OTHERS TO UPLOAD copyrighted movies/songs ARE INDEED breaking copyright laws. Downloading isn't illegal but 'allowing the use for uploading' IS VERY illegal. :) Have Fun and be patient until you get the hang of 'ripping' and/or 'burning'.
