OVERRATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THe only reason that he is getting this much publicity and everyone loves Papi, is because he plays in Boston. If Justin Morneau played in Boston, then he would be deserving of all the attention, but thank god that Morneau plays for the Twins, where they never get any publicity.

So you hate Papi?

I don't think you can use the fact that manny bats behind him against him? That is a very very weak point! Most good teams have a good hitter beyond another good hitter in the 3-4 spots in the line-up!

What exactly had Inge won? NOTHING! Ortiz was a vital tool in 2 World Series WINS! Not to mention the MOST Vital tool in the 2004 ALCS!

People bash Papi for his defense but in both World Seriessssss he has actually played first very well! This is like saying the left fielder stinks because the ball never comes his way? Sure Papi's range isn't too good but that isn't what Boston pays him so well to do!

If you think Ortiz is the worst fielder ever, you obviously never saw Dave Kingman play.
It depends on what you mean by over-rated. Fielding for first basemen is generally over-rated. He could play there if he had to. If you mean he is rated as a HOF member, he is probably over-rated. If you mean he is rated as a leading force on the WS winning team, that's about accurate.
And I am not a Sox fan.

And Inge has an OPS+ of 85 (e.g. BELOW major league average) with a high in RBI of 83. Ortiz has an OPS+ of 139 and more than 83 RBI for the past 5 seasons. If we're comparing Inge to Ortiz as hitters, Ortiz is clearly far superior.

He may not be the best player- but since the Red Sox are such a big team, he gets a lot of attention. He's not overrated, the Red Sox just have a big fan base.

And obviously, you didn't watch any of the World Series, in which he WAS forced to play the field.

Plus any other time they play at the home of a national league, he DOES play the field.

Also- he is a typical power hitter- he may not have the highest batting average, but when he hits the ball, he hits the ball.

Ortiz is NOT overrated. Despite the improbabiliy of those stats you listed, you cannot argue with the bottom line. The numbers he puts out are great and he never gets hurt. Will he be a hall-of-fame? NO! That might be why you think he is overrated. In his time with the Twins, Papi averaged .266 BA, 10 HR, 40 RBI, 1 SB per season for six seasons. With Boston it has been: .302, 42, 128, 1 per season for five seasons. In Minnesota he averaged 76 games and 246 at-bats a year, while in Boston it was 147 and 548. So generally speaking Papi plays twice as much with Boston, but got hurt in Minnesota and only played half as much. If you double the Twins stats in the power and RBI department, you will find that those numbers are good and that he would have played that way if he didn't get hurt. In short, Papi's too old to put up Hall stats, but he definatly is one of the most clutch hitters in the game today. As for defence? Well, take a look at Frank Thomas and tell me that career DH is overrated.

As a Yankees fan, David Ortiz is the one person we hate to see at bat when the game is on the line. It actually amazes me that other teams haven't figured that out yet. He is amazing and not overrated. He would probably play first base good enough to get by, but it's his bat that makes he great.

Okay, I think you've got some misinformation here.

David Ortiz has at least six career walkoff homers with the Sox, but you say that Inge has 4 times as many. So, you're saying Brandon Inge has 24 walkoff homers? Really? Would you care to show where you found that statistic?

You also underestimate his clutch stats. For his career, he's got an OBP over .400 with two outs and RISP.

I'm not a Sox fan at all - Jays all the way - but I think you're way off here. Having Manny around obviously helps, but Ortiz is a great player.

If you think hes anything more than Mo Vaughn on steroids, your kidding yourself. At least Mo could stand at 1st every six days or so. He's had alot of success in a short period of time, but the amount of attention he gets is due more to his physical size and the tendency of the media to jump on the bandwagon. If he was doing this on the Pirates, he would righly be considered an out of shape slugger, and most fans would write him off as a fat guy who "sees ball, hits ball" until a year or two later when his body breaks down and the numbers aren't there anymore.

Well, in one respect maybe he is over rated. Day to day play, with his lack of speed, he might not be the certain Hall of Famer some people rate him as.

However, as a clutch hitter and post season performer, he is, if anything, UNDER rated. In any game, bottom of the 9th, tie score, he's the one I want batting.

ortiz is not over rated...this yaer just proved that he does not have to hit 40 homers to drive in runs...ask some of the pitchers who they would not want to pitch to in an important situation and i guarantee that ortiz is on almost all if not all of their lists...just cause he wasnt hitting homeruns like he did in 04 and 05 when he was really popular now all of a sudden hes overrated cause he only hits 35 or so...thats messed up
