The label says that it softens water.....
I am setting up a new aquarium - to put my Betta in - he is used to dechlorinated tap water....which is on the hard side.

Its not going to shock my fish is it?

The tannins the driftwood releases are very effective at softening water DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF WOOD. African wood will NOT have nearly as much affect on your hardness as Malaysian or South American wood would... Either way, Bettas are very hardy, and a small jump from hard to slightly soft water would not be a problem. As Confused said, it is relatively gradual, though you may notice immediate staining of the water.

Driftwood will not be a problem for your betta. No, it will not "shock" the fish. Make sure that the driftwood you choose doesn't have jagged edges that can damage the betta's fins.

Driftwood slowly and safely lowers the PH of the water,so don't worry,it won't shock your fish.
