Yes
The Santa Claus tradition comes from Nicholas Claus the Bishop of Ulm in Germany hundreds of years ago. This real person was also mixed as time went by with the ancient psuedo-pagan mythical figure of Father Christmas. Nicholas of Ulm used to pass out gifts to poor kids at Christmas from a horse drawn sleigh. He was cannonized (made a saint)after his death by the Catholic church.
Santa Claus is real because he was already declared a saint. Therefore, if he is a saint, he can perform miracles such as giving gifts to a mass number of good children

Santa means saint, Claus was an actual Roman Catholic Saint, so yes there is a Santa Claus. His story does have to do with giving, a poor man had three daughters because he was poor he could not marry them off because of the customs of giving away your daughter, well his option was to prostitue them starting from the oldest to youngest, he prayed on this, At the monent this priest over heard the prayer and what he did was throw bags of gold into the man house while they where asleep, he was able to educate his daughter she was married off, again happen to the middle and then youngest they were married off, the poor man found out about this and thank the priest for his charity.

There was once a Saint Nicholas of Myra who was known for his charity, that much is true. Present day Santa Claus is an amalgamation of the mythologies of several different cultures, repackaged as the figurehead for the secular version of Christmas. Santa is not a real person, but he is a very real and effective fictional character as well as symbol of gift giving (on the moderate end), or capitalism (in the more extreme of views).
Translation: there is no jolly man dressed in red who should be sliding down your chimney on Christmas eve.

No santa and the whole thing about buying presents is only to distract us from the true meaning of Christmas. Celebrating the birth of Jesus

Yes, he was based on a historical figure. Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Santa Claus. He was a 4th century Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity.
