Sadly, domestic quality still lags behind foreign quality. As for value, you wont get it until America finally gets rid of the greed of the UAW and other unions. Study the past records, its been the pushing of the UAW that has crippled the Big 3. Remove them, put in folks that actually want to work, and get the quality back on par with the imports and you will see more purchases. Another person also mentioned about things like the Enclave selling hotter in the EU than in the USA. Not to mention that the GTO sold in the EU for 4 years as the Mondeo (if memory serves) and is still selling there while the GTO here stateside is being or has been canned. Things like Subaru and Toyota making plants here for final assembly is laughable. The parts are still made elsewhere, then shipped over and slapped together by folks here who are operating robotic armatures and programs to make the machines do most of the work. Simply put, those vehicles are still foreign built, and thats the bottom line.

It's all a matter of perception, you need to have high quality AND get that high quality recognized by places like consumer reports, and other reviewers. I agree , I work with both big 3 and the import companies, and the americans hold you to just as high a standard.
It's an absolute fallacy that there is any difference between the quality of American cars and foreign cars.

Really, have you checked the resale value of a domestic car vs imports?
compare a Chevy and a Honda for example.
Success= HIGHER quality + lower price+ higher resale value
Is Honda a foreign company? Plants in Alabama for min-vans and SUV. Plant in OH for all cars sold in US
Toyota has plants in KY, 2 in IN, TX, MS, MI, CA
Nissan has plants in TN, MS
Mazda has a plant in MI

Domestic doesnt mean anything anymore. The guts of a chevy equinox are made in china. The chevy aveo is made in korea. Japanese automakers entered the market, established a reputation for quality, reliability and ease of maintenance. Consumers responded by buying and loving them. Brand loyalty sticks. It's a global market now, deal with it. GM sells more buicks in china than the US. Your perceptions are wrong.
My subaru was manufactured in indiana. By american workers, they make toyota camrys in the same plant now.

The other answers were good. Another thing that would help is getting more in movies and other forms of public media that build a positve image. Look at what "The Fast and the Furious" did for Jap cars.

Make the US cars cheaper and better quality. FORD (Found-On-Road-Dead) has more than earned its name! No wonder Toyota and Honda have so much business. Every single Ford I have owned has died with transmission problems (and the same for my friends), now that I have a toyota I will never go back....
