Salts and metals are two substances that do not contain covalent bonds. Salts are another term for ionic compounds. Ionic compounds contain ionic bonds, which involve a transfer of electrons between a metal and a non-metal. Metal atoms are bonded due the attraction of their positive nuclei to the surrounding "sea of electrons." Electrons sort of move around freely in metals, which is where that term comes from. These two types of substances do not have covalent bonds, since covalent bonds involve two non-metals sharing pairs of electrons.
