The top 2 teams in the Johan sweepstakes are.... yes you guessed it the Yankees and Red Sox. It's like these two teams are always at the center of baseball. And you know if either the Yankees and/or Red Sox don't get Johan they will just go after Dan Haren or Erik Bedard in another bidding war.

But the latest on the Johan trade. The Yankees are willing to offer Phil Hughes to Minnesota. Phil Hughes might be the key addition that might shift the advantage to New York. Boston is too stubborn to include Clay Buckholtz or Ellsbury, who in my opinion isn't half the player Phil Hughes is and potentially could be.

We will have to see if the Red Sox have enough cahones to counter-offer Buckholtz or Ellsbury, but I doubt it. I don't think there is much desire to get Johan in bean town than there is in the big apple. The Yankees need Johan more than the Red Sox need him.

I hope NYY does get Santana. So Cleveland can find new and creative ways to beat on that guy, just doing it 5 times a year is getting boring-if I was Johan I'd want out of the Central as well.

OK, let's recap on the Santana issue:

As of 4:45pm yesterday (11/30), the New York Yankees believe that if the Boston Red Sox were on the brink of acquiring Johan Santana that the Minnesota Twins would let them know as a way to make one best package offer. And as of last night, the Yanks had not heard such info.

As of now, Boston is still refusing to include the center fielder Minnesota craves, Jacoby Ellsbury, and is instead offering Coco Crisp, who is owed $10 million over wo seasons. But the other pieces of the package, likely pitchers Jon Lester and Justin Masterson, and infielder Jed Lowrie are an attractive collection.

As of 2:28am today (12/1), the high stakes game of baseball poker, with Minnesota Twins left-hander Johan Santana sitting in the ever-growing pot, continued Friday when the New York Yankees said they would include prized righty Phil Hughes in the deal according to the New York Daily News.

According to the Daily News, after Twins GM Bill Smith, the Yankees knew they couldn't make a deal for Santana without including Hughes, their 21-year-old righthander widely regarded as a potential staff ace.

The latest blurb from Yahoo Sports as of 8:19am today (12/1) states Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein made a couple of roster moves, just not the one that would bring Minnesota Twins lefty Johan Santana to Beantown.

According to Boston.com, the Red Sox still refuse to add outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury or pitcher Clay Buchholz, their top two prospects, to the deal. Even the Boston media acknowledges the Yankees are the leaders in the Santana sweepstakes.

It almost sounds like a done deal with New York and the Boston EpsteinSox are moving on. Try Bedard or Haren, the Yanks won't go after them.

I believe your observations are accurate and I don't see much that I can Add. I do agree with you that the Yankees need Santana more than the Red Sox. The best scenario for the Red Sox would be if Santana went to some team other than the Yankees or Red Sox. Santana on the Yankees would certainly be something of a concern for the Red Sox.

As you can tell from my name thing I'm not a Red Sox or Yankees fan, (and I wish we could get Santana) but Boston will get him because Minnesota wants this shortstop prospect of theirs, Jed Lowrie. And they'd like to throw in Lester too. I think Boston is just trying to get him just to keep him out of the Bronx though. They already have good starting pitching and prospects too. See you guys at the Subway Series

It's not a matter of the Red Sox management having cahones. Honestly, we don't need to lay our good players on the line, we have the best pitching staff in all of baseball. I think the Red Sox are driving up the price for Santana, that's for sure! I think the Yanks will get him because God knows you need him.

The yanks definantly need santana more,i do agree, but i just dont get all this hughes is the greatest pitcher and he's twice the player of buckholtz or lester, wow i dont live by what the critics say or belive, just on what happens on the field and from what i've seen none of the yanks prospects including joba, who in my opinion choked under pressure, match any of the sox players.

I agree with you. I believe the Yankees will end up signing Santana, Rowand, and either Haren or Bedard. Yankee ownership wants a championship........NOW!

As usual, the Yanks throw away young talent for an expensive star.
