They look for a warm spot, usually by following a person. They see by infra-red, if I remember correctly, so you stand out like a spotlight on a cold day.

Any that are out once the temperature goes below freezing for more than a few hours will die of hypothermia.

Given my recent luck, the bugs must think I'm a very warm spot.

The total time to go through all four stages (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) depends on the temperature and the type of mosquito, but typically takes 14 days or less in warmer weather. In various species the time varies from 4 to 30 days.

All mosquitoes and flies die during very cold weather. When the temps of an area rise above a certain level, the eggs from the previous season hatch.

During rain, they find cover like most other animals and insects.

I agree with "The Doc" they look for a warm place, but there are no warm places in the Arctic. Have you seen those Doco's on TV. Where the ground is frozen 9 months of the year. As soon as spring arrives there are literaly billions of them, mosquitos that is. I'd hate to live there.
