There is no such thing. Self publishing companies are notorious for being scams and rip-offs. They produce low quality books that will end up costing you a lot of money. They could care less what you publish as long as your check clears the bank. They do nothing to help you market the book. Basically they just sell you a box of books for you to sell yourself. You won't be sold in bookstores. Nobody will know about your book unless you spend huge sums of money and time to promote it yourself. If you are lucky, you will sell 2/3 as many copies as you have family and friends. You will also be lucky if you get paid properly for what you sell. I have heard of many people who didn't get paid by Lulu.

Go to Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks and check any publisher out before you send them any material or money. You will find that in the case of Publish America, for instance, Absolute Write has their own little forum for them. With over 57 THOUSAND posts complaining about their services. Most of these self publishers are being sued up the wazoo. Stay away.

If you truly believe in yourself and in your book, you owe it to yourself to spend at least twice as long trying to sell your book traditionally as you did writing it. Being self published does NOT make you a published author in the eyes of publishers and agents. Nobody scrutinized or judged your book for publication. You just paid for it. It is night and day.

If you want information on traditional publishing, I star all great Q and A on writing and publishing on my profile. You can go there and surf through. Print out any you think will help you. Ask someone to buy you a copy of Writers Market for Christmas.

No doubt people will answer this question by writing glowing reports about different self publishers. They are called sock puppets. They are people from the company telling tales that aren't true. Don't believe a word of it.

While many self-publishing companies are scams and you should heed Persepony_Hellecat's advice, some are not scams. Lulu.com is one of those. There are others but I don't know them.

Although I have never self-pubbed anything with them, I have heard good things from people who have and who frequent the water cooler at absolutewrite.com

Listen to Persiphone, she knows what she's talking about.
No one considers anyone self-published to actually be an author.
