If you are on the ground floor and can reach the unit you can buy a cover specifically designed to protect your window a/c unit. These should be available at Sears Hardware, Wal-Mart, K-Mart or your local hardware store. The other suggestion of removing it from the window has much merit.

You really don't have to do anything. If it is where you can get to it easily, then you can cover it with heavy plastic to prevent drafts from coming in.If it is not accessable, you can just leave it as is and tape a sheet of plastic over the front of the A/C unit inside. It doesn't matter if it gets snowed on.

If you can get to it easily, wrap a plastic garbage bag or something similar around it and duck tape it. If you cannot get to it, you will have to slide the unit out of the casing and then seal it up...

Wrap it up with plastic. The best thing to do would be to remove it from the window and store it.

Remove the filter cover. Put on some washing rubber gloves and soak your hands in vaseline. Rub the filter thoroughly. This always works for me.
