I know it may not be part of everyone's everyday life, but I personally find Pascal's triangle to be extremely useful for the expansion of binomials raised to integer powers. Off the top of my head, I know that (x + 1)^4 = x^4 + 4x^3 + 6x^2 + 4x + 1 because [1 4 6 4 1] is the fourth level of the triangle (if the top level, [1], is considered the zeroth level).

(I think the previous answerer was thinking of the Pythagorean theorem.)

Say you have to place a long, narrow object in a bow. If the object is longer than the box is, then one might be able to fit it in the box is the ends of the object is in the corner of the box.
