Because it allows for an open debate of ideas among citizens, as well as provides for a free press, which is essential to transparency in government. Without the ability to find out what the government is doing in our name and with our money, our liberties are only an illusion. While the second amendment is the last line of defense against violations of the other nine amendments, I still believe the first is most important, which is likely why they made it the first.

It's not. The most important Amendment is the Tenth, which which is supposed to put the brakes on the government and give powers not expressly given to the federal government to the states or to the people.
