I will agree with most of the posters on this question regarding the San Antonio Metro Bus System. It is in almost all cases clean dependable and efficient. It is also a cost effective way to commute. There are a couple of issues, however to be considered. There are a few areas of the city with limited or no bus routes, make sure you find housing on a bus route if you plan to use it frequently. Also, if you work late shifts, there are often routes which will get you to work, but you can't get home.
I used the bus to commute for a while and found I could get to the work site most of the time, but couldn't get home if I had to stay after 8 pm because the bus stopped for the day.
I now live in an area of the city where the closest bus stop is 6 miles from my house.
Additionally, there are issues in rain and bad weather.
But, as we generally have great weather in the city, and if you go to the San Antonio Via System website and make sure you can get to and from work, you should have no significant problems.
Despite, the lack of bike routes in San Antonio and the supposedly wonderful bike routes in the beautiful city to the north (Austin) statistics show that in both cities, among working persons (not students) approximately 1-2 % of persons in each city commute to work by bike.

Public transportation is available to anyone in need, I have known many folks that don't and have never owned a car here, I am not sure what Kevin is talking about when he speaks of riding a bicycle, frankly if I was a woman and going to work in a dress I wouldn't want to ride a bike either, and as far a riding a bike in Austin with or without the bike lanes, I wouldn't ride there even on a really good bet. THEY DRIVE CRAZY and traffic is real heavy. A second thought about owning a car or using public transportation.
A new car or used is up to the buyer but figuring a small inexpensive new car with a monthly payment of $300 and $100 for insurance, $200 for gasoline ($50 a week, one tank) and $20 for maintenance. plus parking fees for down town parking. That would be an average cost of $20.67 a day for a car and that is if you used it 30 days a month but remember that that cost goes on whether you use the car or not, but if you used it just the days that you went to work it would average $25.83 a day. There are those that would say so buy a used car. I would agree with them but a good used car will have as high a monthly payment as a small new car because the used car you can not finance as long and the maintenance cost is considerably higher. You can purchase a monthly bus pass for $25.00 in San Antonio not as convenient as a car but a heck of a lot cheaper.

Depends on where you live and what time frame you are looking at. In my area, if you want to get downtown, you better have about a good 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours and I am only 15 miles from the downtown area. However if you live inside Loop 410, yes...by all means use the bus. It's convenient and very afforable. My son uses it all the time and lives near San Antonio College. He has a car and finds it more economical and easier to get around than in his car unless he comes sees me and his grandparents who all live outside Loop 410.

Austin is a more pedestrian/bike rider friendly city with bike lanes and sidewalks that are not in dis-repair. In San Antonio you will definately need to get a drivers license because there isn't enough bike roads.

My great niece decided to take off and live in SA and rode the bus. They seem to have a pretty good bus system but she wasn't smart enought to live close to where she worked so she spent a great deal of time getting to and from work.
