You are describing pneumonia, which is best treated in a good habitat.

Turtles, like the RES, hunt, eat, defecate, court, mate, hibernate, relax, and sleep in the water going on land mostly to travel, lay eggs, and bask. Land, apart from basking, stresses them but they can stay on it until hunger and thirst drive them back- but they are not happy or healthy on the land.

The treatment for pneumonia is a vet visit. Home treatment would be:
- Raise water temps to 80-85F instead of the usual 75-80F
- Offer UVB lighting if possible
- Make sure the water is clean, usually by using a powerful filter
- Try the fish medicine 'Stress Coat', per directions
- Feed high-quality food as outlined in either of the sites below.

It is important to separate the sick turtle and get it the proper care. Further stress will just make recover less likely.

Try this. Make a dry habitat for the RES (but only for 24 hours), make the temp 80-85F. While the turlte is in this dry habitat correct any issues with the aquatic one. Get the water temps around 80F, get a good basking area with temps of 90-95F. Since the turtle is already out of the water, give the tank a good cleaning, change the filter elements. Make sure you have a good bulb capable of producing UVB, if you have one and it is older than 6 months then replace it. Also maybe go to the bird section of your local pet store and buy a cuttle bone, throw it in the tank and the turtle will bite it and get a little extra calcium. It doesn't sound like your turtles problem has anything to do with calcium but it is always good to have. It sound like an upper respirotory infection, but I AM NOT VET. If the symptoms continue to worsen after doing what I outlined a vet visit would be worth it. Good luck

hi, in case you are able to preserve a water temp between seventy two-seventy 8 levels F without a water heater, you will no longer would desire to save the sunshine on. you will desire to basically depart the sunshine on 8-10 hours an afternoon so the turtles follows the day/nighttime cycle. desire this helps.
