It would be an expensive, confusing process to undertake.

It would cost too much money to change everything in the country from feet to meters, gallons to liters, ounces to grams, Calories to kilojoules, etc. Much of the nation's measuring equipment would have to be modified or replaced. Not to mention the nightmare of teaching metrics to the general public, and the public outcry because of nostalgia over gallons of milk and such.

Now, in science and medicine, and related industries like pharmaceuticals, almost everything already is in the metric system, with the exception of a few things like Calories. I am a chemist, and I can't even imagine trying to mentally go between ounces and pounds, and fluid ounces, cups, pints, and gallons.

The metric system is far easier to use than the English system. Even the English don't use the English system, any more. I believe the major reason for the foot-dragging in the US is lobbying by manufacturers who would have to re-tool factories, drawings, and training to accommodate the different system.

It is certainly easier. The automotive industry has changed to metric. However, other industries have not because it requires completely new equipment. The expense of making the switch would be very large.
