to read them no point in buying if you are only going to read it once.

People borrow books from libraries for many reasons:
1. The cost of buying books (especially hard backs) is rising every year. The average cost of a hard back fiction book is about $25.
2. People can check out a multitude of books on many subjects. And, it's FREE! Books for general use (pleasure reading), books for reports, books for information.
3. The library is usually fairly generous with lending- renewals are available and fines are relatively low.
4. The library has more than just books as well- CDs, DVDs, Books on tape and CD, etc.
5. If the library in your neighborhood doesn't have the book you need, the librarian will ask another library to send it. Cool!

To read books. It's free and it's convenient (well, it is for me, I live right across the street from one). It allows me to check out books, read them, and return them so if I don't like the book it's not an issue and if I do like the book, I can just buy it.
If you're a student and doing research, it doesn't make sense to buy books you're only going to use for a report.
And if I bought every book that I got from the library, I wouldn't have room for anything. It would be all books and I'd have to go to a motel or something to sleep. I love reading.

To get a chance to talk to the wonderful librarian!!
Seriously, it's free. Many of the books in the library are out of print. You can check out dvds, cds, toys, puppets, cake pans, and magazines at the same time. Libraries have free computer time, wireless internet access and offer many useful and entertaining programs. Libraries and librarians can help people spend their time and money wisely.
Why wouldn't you borrow a book from a library?

Well...There are many reasons. One reason could be the book is out of date and is no longer in publication. Another could be for research on a project/assignment or essay. I'm sure you wouldn't go out and buy 5 books and spend $80+ on research material just so you can do an essay.
Additionally, you may just use the library for personal gain (ie. learning more about cars)

People check books out from the library to take home and enjoy. The atmosphere in the library is stale and cold. People enjoy reading in their favorite chairs at home or in bed, or wherever they feel the most comfortable.

I can only speak for myself, so here are my reasons.
They have more variety, I dont have to pay, I dont have to store them (most important since they will just stay in storage when I am done reading). If the book turns out dissapointing, I can still say "Man am I glad I didnt shell out the money to buy THAT !"
There are plenty of reference books there that I can never afford to buy.
Libraries for me is like a place where treasures abound. It is a wonderful place to get lost in. You can study, research, dive into the entertainment section, microfiche, old newspaper articles, old books, history et al.
May libraries live forever.

Some people enjoy reading.
It saves the expense of finding enough reading matter for young readers, books that will be enjoyed, but out-grown in 6 months time.
There seem to be very few second-hand book shops. Charity shops just aren't the same. Nor is on-line text.

Why buy a book when you can borrow a book and besides won't become clutter. Some people just don't have the extra $$ to spend either.
It will make those who grew up with the card catalog to love the internet and visa versa. Those who does not know what that is can respect the internet more lol!

The selection is better? I looked at Church but they only had two kinds - Bible and Hymnal.
I looked at the Car Wash, but they only had ratty 3 year-old People magazines in the waiting room.
I look at McDonald's - no books at all.
Maybe, just maybe - people go to the library because that's where the books are!

Because it's free, and it saves a tree from being cut down.... if everyone borrows a book instead all buying the same book, think of all the trees we'd save!
