You use 100% of your brain all the time. You may be consciously aware of only 10% of your brain activity, but the other 90% is always working. Think of all the activity your brain has to mediate....sensation, perception, thoughts, movement, your circulatory system, your circadian rhythm....and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Almost every nerve cell in our brains is active most of the time. Scientists can detect this activity by measuring the electrical currents of nerve cells near the surface of the brain. More complex tests like PET (Positron Emission Tomography) can detect oxygen consumption, blood flow or glucose consumption (the sugar that is the brain fuel) by active neurons in all areas of the brain, not just the surface. Just about ALL of the human brain is busy all the time—even when we're sound asleep.

I have heard this a lot, and i am beginning to resent this question. Why do people keep on saying that we use only 2 % or 10% or what ever percent of our brains. You should say that I know only 2 % of all that brain does. If we are using only 2 % of brain, can i open you surgically and cleave out the rest 98%? Surely, if you only need 2%, you wouldn't mind people taking away what you don't need? And if a part was not used, it would become weak and atrophy like those muscles . WE USE 100 % of our brains. Only the scientists and other people refuse to accept that they don't know what brain does all the time. SO they kep on saying we are using 2 %, 10% etc. all this is stupid. Brain is not a hard drive. It is exceedingly complex and can't be compared to a piece of machinery whose fuel efficiency we can calculate. There is a lot we don't know, but that doesn't mean its not there. How much of %age of our hearts do we use?

It is possible to surgically disconnect an entire hemisphere of a young human brain in a procedure known as functional hemispherectomy. Cognisant and physical functionality remain viable after such a procedure.

It is ridiculous to assert that we use any given percentage of our brain. All the cells function, even if only as relays, in one situation or another.

well, if you take into account the fact that when we are developing inutero billions of brain cells atrophy and die, it is very difficult to say an exact amount. the theory that we only use 10% of our brain has been disproven.

ive heard that we only use less then 3%.
its amazing and pity at the same time.
its amazing that less than 3% use of it can do lots of things
and pity that we dnt use 97% of it
so each of us has great potential.
nothing is impossible :]

Would agree with Xiaodao. (Bill Bailey tells us so)
As for Jessie - just let me tell you my girl that I have been known to peak as high as 2% - granted not very often
