been here before, use your nasal syringe to clean out the babes nose before you nurse, a little sterile water or saline dropped into the nose before you aspirate will help loosen the crap up, their is a better chance for your child to not be proscribed antibiotics at this age or for this problem. When eardrums are red that means there is pressure and build up in the eustachian tubes, that run from the ear to the throat.
If you nurse in a more upright position, (for the baby that is like sitting up more so than lying down) that will help some as well, a warm compress, (a warm wet washcloth in a ziploc baggie) placed on the inside ear when the infant is nursing will also help to keep the pain down,
the most important thing is to keep the babe hydrated so nurse the babe as long and as often as they want. It will put a damper on things you need to get done but think of it as time well spent, the child needs your comfort and needs your milk, so settle in with a box of tissues, your aspirator, lots of fluids for you and a warm, wet washcloth. There are antibodies in your milk that child needs, not to mention the fluids.
Put on a good movie and relax, when your tense the baby will feel that and react by crying, fussing and refusing to eat.
If the child's fever goes up or they develop difficulty breathing return to the urgent care or go to the hospital. Until that time, nurse as often and a long as the baby wants, aspirate often and know that it will only last about a day or two.
I nursed 6 children and found the above to be a lifesaver, although my household chores didn't get done for a few days, thank the lord for paper plates.

A "little infection" can turn into a more severe one, especially in the ear, so I would be rather cautious with this.
Since your baby is feeling so miserable, I would try and get a second opinion from a different doctor, and perhaps it would be best if you insisted on an antibiotic prescription if the ear appears to have an infection, even if only 'a little'.
Ear infections are terribly painful and they can progress in intensity very rapidly. I was a sufferer of chronic ear infections as a child, and even into my teenage years, and I wouldn't want my baby enduring such discomfort and pain because a doctor didn't think it was that big of a deal.
Good luck, and I hope she starts feeling better soon!

Don't worry about not receiving antibiotics, they are really over prescribed for ear infections anyhow. they are kinda like a cold, ya know, if you take medicine it will be gone in a week, if not 7 days kinda thing. This will sound weird, but try dropping a little bit of breastmilk in her ear a couple times a day. Breastmilk is useful for so many things other than food! It helps clear up ear infections, pink eye, etc. Continue offering the breast often, as your baby will eat when she's hungry, and just continue to love and snuggle her, keeping her as comfy as possible. Good luck!

90% of ear infections go away on their own. People are far to quick about jumping on the antibiotic bandwagon. Your doctor was not bad, she is in fact following protocol.
I would suggest giving her pain reliever and squirt some breastmilk into her ear. I've had TWO doctors for my kids that have suggested this--even squirting it into the nose for colds. Sounds crazy, but works great. You already have antibodies in your milk, so take advantage of it! Good luck!

Put a few drops of breastmilk in the infected ear. It will help soothe it and clear the infection up quicker. I'd suggest getting her in to her regular doctor asap, but using the breastmilk while you wait will help a lot.

I agree with the doctor, giving antibiotics can take care of it, but then the infection can return stronger the next time my husband was always given antibiotics for ear infections and they always returned my daughter had one once i refused the antibiotics and she's never had another sense, try to keep her propped upright while she eats and ASK the doctor about giving her tylenol for the pain.
you can call into your regular doctors office for their advice on tylenol and the infection good luck!

Look my little brother gets this all the time, and they do hurt ALOT.. Your best bet is to go to a ENT (Ear, Nose, throut) Clinic they will give you antibiotics... Because all those number drops to is try to dull the pain while it gets worse.

It takes time, but keep nursing, your antibodies are the BEST thing you can give her. Not to mention, it soothes her and lets her know that Mommy is near her. The ear infection will pass. :) Keep it up, you're doing the best thing for your daughter!

Poor baby! I know it sounds weird, but a few drops of breast milk in the ear every couple of hours can work wonders.
