It seems to me that the purpose of a RPG is to offer a kind of escape for a player, to imagine yourself as being another person in this other kind of world. A stand alone type RPG seems more likely to allow this than the online MMORPG's. With online gaming you realize you are just dealing with other people out in the real world. The believeability of it all is kind of lost. And people on the internet can act even more annoying and obnoxious than they do in real life. People just say whatever they think on the internet without worrying about being sued or punched in the nose. One of the reasons a person would want to escape into another little world is for reasons like that...to get away from those kind of people they find themselves dealing with in real life. Are "friends" you make online really friends? A stand alone game is probably more likely to have a meaninful storyline too. The story for online gamers never seems to end. It just goes on and on. To what end?

It is kinda thing you have to play before you can really understand it. But, there are tons of quest you do to level your character. Always there are new goals your trying to obtain.
Or you play a different class to lean the abilities on how to play them. PVP "Player vs Player" can be rather exciting because you are pitting your skills your knowledge of your avatar against a real live person. True, people like anywhere can be obnoxious. But, many games have ways to ignore them. And "believe it or not"people can become real friends! Where you talk to them on the phone or even meet in person.
Interacting with other people is always much more interesting than going it alone!
