...horror film-wise, might I recommend 1922's "Nosferatu"; one of the very first adaptions of author Bram Stoker's "Dracula", this film has held up quite well, as far as chill-to-the-bone thrills...

Murnau's "Nosferatu" is a good pick. so are "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920) and "Metropolis" (1927).
