One of my co-workers was dying to lick some limestone. She actually craved the stonework on buildings and when she told me which ones and was confused why some seemed more appealing than others, I knew those buildings were limestone, not the granite ones. She got some vitamin supplements from her doctor - apparently she was running short on lime or another ingredient in limestone. It was really funny - she was walking around the buildings, asking herself if it would hurt just to lick them!

The cravings you described, plus some that others have mentioned here, could be due to a condition called Pica that affects a small percentage of pregnant women. Pica is a craving for a non-food substance. There's no definite cause, but some researchers believe it may be linked to an iron deficiency. You can read more about it in the link I posted below.
I haven't really had any cravings for bizarre things, but I have strong cravings for hot chocolate - I have to have it every day. A few weeks ago (before my heartburn really got bad) I wanted banana peppers all the time.

there are actually a lot of people that have those crazy cravings. from what I have read on them they can be really dangerous for the baby if you're not careful. normal food cravings is fine but the dirt cravings an such are something to read up on and watch. I ahev heard of some women that wanted to drink gasoline or paint thinner. If i remember right I think it has to do with something in your childhood that makes you want those things...I am not quite sure about that tho.

I LOVE crunchy tacos and nachos right now. I went to 7-11 last night at 2am for some nachos! I ate them before I was pregnant, but I need them now! That's all I really CRAVE. Now, I have a lot of things that I can't stand right now--chocolate being one of them. I loved chocolate before and now just the thought makes me lose my appetite. Anything fried makes me lose my appetite as well, the thought the taste and especially the smell!

I never had any strange cravings either time I was pregnant. The first time I got pregnant though, it was my husband who had ALL the cravings, and he would not stop eating! We pulled up to a drive through one night and he went on and on about how he knows I am pregnant but not to order a ton of food. I usually order 2 little tacos but that night I wanted 3 little tacos. When it was our turn I ordered exactly what I had wanted and he ordered half the menu. He told me afterward that he was embarrassed and would never say another word to me again about it. lol

I didn't crave chewing or eating things other than food, but in my first trimester, I craved coleslaw for like a month. It had to be the kind I make, which is the bag of mix like you buy in the store and a bottle of Brianna's poppyseed salad dressing (I mix that together and it's pretty good coleslaw).
Anyway...sounds pretty gross to me now, but I ate it for breakfast alot...NASTY!

Those cravings for non nutritious items is called pica. It could mean you're deficient in other nutrients. Try and get a healthy balanced diet. Stay away from tires!
