Mom doesn't do a tree any more, but when she did, she had a bird that always went on. I think it was bought for her first Christmas (1925).
Poor thing, all the paint had long fallen off. She's put it somewhere not easily in view because it got to looking so pathetic.
We've had some quirky Christmasses, but I wouldn't call them customs, exactly.
One year, Mom bought us all kazoos and she suddenly stood up and said "Everyone get your kazoo out; we have to do the Christmas song now."
For some reason, we all did exactly the same thing, and performed "Happy Birthday" on our kazoos.
There was the year we went carrolling on New Year's Eve. (A friend who loved carrolling was visiting, and was complaining that she couldn't get her family to go carrolling, as they were all stodgy poo-poo heads.)
I guess I just have a quirky family.

We have a pine cone on a red ribbon given to me by a Native American friend. When placed at the top of our tree it is supposed to bring us good luck through the coming winter. I don't believe it was a Christmas custom to begin with though.

Yes, I have to have a full english breakfast on Christmas day.
It helps soak up all that alcohol later in the day. O'h and I do like to drink Tia Maria on Christmas day too for some reason. It is my favourite christmas drink.

Mine doesn't have anything to do with the tree, it' about Christmas day. The day is just for relaxation - checking out your new stuff, and just having a good time. Nobody even cooks meals, we just snack all day long. My Grandma makes Chicken wings, and we play poker.

my children take it in turn to put the angel on the christmas tree. and they remember from one year to the next whos turn it is, and it has to go on last, mind you its not really an angel its a toilet roll with a ping pong and some tinsel which my son made me 9 years ago, and although i have proper angels, i always put that one on top, they also take it in turn to feed santa and reindeers and my children also have new pyjamas to wear christmas eve.........dont know why santa leaves presents downstairs, and he also writes them a letter on the computer which we read before opening the presents..........my kids are 8 and 10 and santa visits them both!!!!

on christmas eve, the entire family (grandparents, uncles, aunts, mom, dad, cousins, sister & brother) all go to chuch together at night. and when we get it, it's about 10pm, then we go home and have dinner, dessert, then clean up, after then we walk around the neighborhood looking at lights. after that, it's about 1am. then we open presents, play games and eat more if we're hungry again. then it's about 3am then we leave.
