I should explain. What are some bands that serve as introductions to genres? Like the first metal band most people get into is Metallica and one of the first progressive bands most people get into is Yes or Rush. Bands that lead you to a certain genre. Wow, I'm doing a terrible job at explaining...

So what are some other "gateway" bands?

Grunge - Nirvana or Pearl Jam
Punk - Rancid, Alkaline Trio, or *shudder* Green Day
Metal - Metallica
Black Metal - Rammstein (always!)
Indie - Decemberists, Elliott Smith, or Sufjan Stevens get a lot of people into indie/acoustic
Classic Rock - Led Zeppelin
Progressive - Rush or (more modern) Coheed & Cambria
Experimental - almost everyone I know who is into experimental music got there from The Mars Volta
Jam Band - Phish
Drum n' Bass - Massive Attack
Southern Rock - Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd
Rap - anything on the radio (50 Cent, Eminem, The Game, Ludacris, etc.)
Techno - sucks.
Emo - The Used or.....Hawthorne Heights
Piano-stuff (i don't know what genre it'd be) - Counting Crows, Ben Folds, The Fray, etc.
Generic Popular **** - Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Panic! At The Disco, New Found Glory, just about anything played on MTV.

the clash's "guns of brixton" was my gateway to my reggae obsession. that one song itself turned me on to a whole different genre.
