When it came to writing the Constitution (and the Bill of Rights), it was not so simple a thing as to have only a few people involved. At times, there were well over thirty. It was not just something that Madison sat down, cranked out, turned in and was approved. Of the many involved, you could easily list Jefferson, Madison (his wife Dolly -- who had great influence over him), John Jay and Patrick Henry. Henry wanted a law requiring men to belong to a given church (and pay tithing) to have the right to vote. The others all disagreed, siting that the English have the Church of England -- that all must by law, be members. Henry wouldn't let it go and was later convinced to run for the office of Governor for the state of Virginia. He ran, was elected and had to give up his seat in Congress and with it, the right to have input into the righting. So, the first amendment, was actually Jefferson's. He simply wanted to avoid having a state sponsored religion or church. All were Christians of one denomination or another, and this would allow each to worship as he saw fit.

Sweet Sam,
Wow you talk about something that scholars have spent lifetimes of study on...
There are multiple books on the First Continental Congress and this will give you an idea of where the nation was going and what it took to get a concensious of something.
The bill of rights is another one that is massive and considering that it was the where all the ammendments started you open a several 100 year process that goes from this to case law and back to congress.
I have read about the First Continental Congress, however the bill of rights. Wow lots of time. Looks like a research project of considerable size to me...Good Luck...
