People cheat because it is easy to do. In this day we are not isolated by distance and inability to manage a second relationship. We are out in the workplace, on the Internet, meeting new people all the time, can text and chat easily even while at work. It is easy to "fall" for someone, start to flirt and then find excuses for cheating. It is not nearly as taboo as it once was, in fact divorce and remarriage is acceptable. It may even be unrealistic to expect long term faithfulness (60 years or more!) for many people...It is a convention that society has created that may no longer be realistic.

I cheated when I was a dumb kid of 20 years old. Though I knew how badly I had hurt that person, I really did not understand the depth of pain it causes and the long term emotional scars it leaves. As I got older I came to understand this. I was cheated on in return several times. Today, there is no way I would ever cheat on anyone EVEN if it was done to me and we managed to salvage a relationship. I choose to live my life with integrity and honesty.
Is it epidemic? Is the sky blue? Yes it is more epidemic than experts would guess since a lot of cheating goes uncaught and not admitted to. Day by day our society lacks more morals. It is a snowball effect. The more cheating, the more children raised by those who have cheated and grow up to do as they have seen their parents do. Eventually, we will have a world where the foundation and idea of love and family has completely collapsed. I would not want to be a young person in the world today having to endure a future such as we have created.
WAKE UP ALL YOU CHEATERS OUT THERE! Find it in your hearts and moral fiber to get counseling, find a church, go to AA or whatever you have to do to live your life in a way that makes you be able to look in the mirror and like what you see.

Maybe...it's hard to tell. If you believe the popular press (and Yahoo Answers), it certainly would appear to be epidemic.
I've never cheated, but I certainly had opportunities, and so has my wife. One of the most important ways to avoid cheating is to stay away from situations where the idea of cheating can be 'nourished', so to speak. We all know what they are.
Also, alcohol/drugs are almost always an inherent factor in all infidelity. I think a lot of people drink or take drugs to reduce or eliminate the natural and appropriate tendency to remain faithful.
Anger is also a big factor in infidelity. Angry emotions can cause a person to justify just about anything against the person with whom he/she is angry.
Put those three things together - environment, suppression of moral tendencies, and anger, and you have the perfect cocktail for cheating. I'm not saying that people won't cheat if those things aren't present, but I'll bet that a lot fewer people would cheat if they would avoid those problems.

honeslty it is nothing new. now women have more power and can leave man without fear of getting beat, which is a great thing. thomas jefferson was married to a white women and had black kids, and still said he never cheated. it is nothing new, thats why it is in the ten commandments, people back then knew it was going on.

I cheated in the past when I was young. I did it to piss off a boyfriend that had cheated on me. Ahhh, being a teenager...
I would not cheat now b/c I am old and too tired. I'm 32.
LOL It just takes too much energy and it sucks to hurt people so badly. We all know how it feels to some degree; it isn't fun.

When i was young and immature i was cheated on, and in revenge i cheated on him. It was utterly stupid, and needless to say that relationship didn't last. We were both young and stupid.
I'm very happily married now. VERY happy. I've been given the opportunity to cheat many times with many different men, and i have to say the thought of betraying my husband repulses me. I know many women (and men) who have cheated, and i think it's disgusting.

Studies show it can be up to half of all relationships, and one study conducted by the University of Hawaii indicated that 60-70% of victims of infidelity are women.
