We use a wood-burning stove to heat our house in the winter. I'm talking about paper trash such as junk mail, old printed documents, etc.

Umm... I wouldnt throw paper in a compost pile.... I saw a clip recently about a university study of garbage heaps and landfills... they discovered newspapers and phone books going back many years that never disintegrated, as they thought they would. You could still read them, lol.

Ideally, the best use would be to recycle the paper, but since youve got a woodburning stove, youve got a good second choice here, and that is to use the paper in the stove. Use it for heat, not just to burn it to get rid of it. For example, you can use newspaper sheets to make paper logs, by rolling it up really tight. Start with a few sheets, rolling it very tightly, and at about 1/2 to 1/3 of the bottom of the page, add your next few sheets. Keep going till you have it at the thickness you want... you can experiment with the thickness as it will affect burn time. Tie it off with a little cotton string. The 'junk mail' can be used as kindling to start a fire.

Good Luck

I'm thinking it's better if you throw it in the trash. I have a compost pile and that's where all of my junk mail and unneeded papers go...after they've been shredded. It takes no time at all for the paper to break down and turn into compost. Isn't that kinda what would happen to it at the landfill? Maybe not.

Why not start your own compost pile? They are super easy and if you're concerned about the environment there's really no better way of recycling. They don't stink either, so many folks think they do, but they actually smell like the forest! Or get a compost bin if you're in the city.

Burning anything makes our planet hotter. Why not save up your papers / magazines for a week or month and drop them off at your local recycling center.

I think it is better if you burn it if you are safe and don't cause a forest fire....
I think the only reason that it might be bad is because it might harm the O-zone
