The Global War on Terror--Question: Why did the US invade Iraq? What is the strongest case for the invasion; what is the strongest case against the invasion? Should the US continue the current War policy or pursue a major departure? I just need to know exactly why the US began this whole situation with Iraq. Thank you!

United States invaded Iraq for the second time due to the Bush Administration.

The strongest case was that the Bush Administration officials said there was over whelming evidence proving that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They had also convinced the American people saying that we needed to invade Iraq this minute because if we didn't the result would be in a form of a mushroom cloud. Also it would be nice to free the people of Iraq which I do believe we have done. However, other resources tell me that we are pretty much using them. (And no not for oil.)

Strongest case against it was just about everything. Never found any weapons of mass destruction. Most Americans believe that they were lied to. A report of employees who worked at the pentagon went on the record saying that they were receiving bits and pieces of intelligence that was not verified but president Bush was using it in his speechs. President Bush had said that Saddam was trying to buy Nukes. He didn't tell you that that took place back in the late 80's very early 90's.

Should the US continue? I once was all for the war. I believed in it and I thought that there was dire consequences if we left right there and then. Right now I do believe we should leave. After all the evidence showing that we are in there for the wrong reasons. America has always been strong because we have always focused on ourselves which might sound bad but ask yourself how great is it here? Theres a lot of key issues that need to be taken care of at home. America was for the most part isolated until the coldwar.

To tell you the truth most everyone in the world would like to know the answers to these very insightful questions you ask. What is most scary is the very people who authorized the invasion are asking the same questions.
Personally, I think the invasion was conducted and poorly I might add, because of greed and hunger for power and control. Right or wrong we are a waring nation. It seems we do not care for elongated periods of peace. 51% of our national budget is for defense. Why do you suppose we make all those weapons and train soldiers to kill?
The answer of course is to make war. We don't really need a whole lot of reason to invade and obviously we do a good (?) job of making one up.
Maybe time will tell why we invaded Iraq. I still haven't figured out why we went to Viet Nam. Oh by the way, I am a combat Vet.

It was first and foremost, all about oil. If Iraq didn't have the second largest oil reserves in the world, the US wouldn't even be there in the first place. The so-called "War On Terrorism" or "Weapons Of Mass Destruction" were just distractions because most people would have not supported such an invasion if they knew the true motives behind it. There's no war going on. It's a occupation. The troops are in the middle of another country's civil war. How exactly do you win another country's civil war? It didn't work in Korea or Vietnam and it's not going to work now.
