This is my first ever pair of binoculars for looking at stars/planets. I was looking into Oberwerks , the company seems really great, and have high quality products. Celestron seems good too though and theirs are less.
Oberwerk 15X70 are $150 and
Celestrons 15X70 are $95 (in the store by me).
I would rathe rnot spend the extra money , but it has the fully mulit coating on the Oberwerk, is that super important???
Also, these are actually a gift , so I would rather they be bought locally, so if its not exactly what my hubby wants we can go right back there.
So do you get what you pay for? I dont want to get him a crappy gift.
Thanks Again in advance, you all have been so helpful in my bino searc.

Celestron is one of the best. Actually, I'm a little surprised since I think that both binoculars will have coated lenses - but the coatings have nothing to do with solar protection - that has more to do with not looking at the sun - but rather with ghosting images and transmittal of ambient light. I don't think he will notice the difference.

Added: For what it's worth, I have found that buying from a local source is a wise thing to do. I bought my Celestron telescope from a local source who is well known as a reputable dealer, and I have been very pleased with it for 7 years. I have not tried the binocular you are describing, but it is nicer than the one I own, so I think it'll work just fine. So will the Oberwerks.

The problem is that Celestron is primarily an importer of products manufactured overseas; the only things they make themselves now are their larger Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes.. They import a wide range of products of varying quantity. In the past, many of these were high quality Japanese products made by Vixen, but they've gradually switched to lower quality product from Synta and other suppliers in China. I have a ten-year-old Celestron Pro 10x50 binocular, actually made in Japan by Vixen, which is really fine. Their current 15x70s are made in China by ?who knows? I've heard they're OK, but can easily lose collimation if roughly handled.

The Oberwerks have much better optics. The multi coated lenses allow you to see a much brighter and more detailed image with much greater contrast. Celestron is only popular because they are cheaper and sell a lot more volume, but they are not made as well as the Oberwerks.

I'm don't know a lot about binoculars. But I'd say that you would require the multi-coating. I think it protects your eyes from the UV rays of the sun. In that case, $55 is worth a pair of good and beautiful eyes. But, check out the link too.
