The top reasons have been schools, crime and city services. The locals know that Detroit isn't "MOST DANGEROUS", but petty thefts have been (like everywhere). Grosse Pointe and Birmingham have excellent school district when compared to DPS. Parents want their kids to grow up and be smart. Overall, I think it's the standards of living as well. In Detroit, all you have is liquor stores and beauty supply stores. You can find all sorts of retail in the suburbs of Metro Detroit. Then, city services are only subpar. It can take hours or never for DPD to respond to a crime report. In Eastpointe, the cops are there in less than 5 Minutes. Not to mention the suburbs are more stricter on sanitation laws rather than the city. You don't see as much blight in the suburbs as the city of Detroit.

I won't lie either, many of the WWII kids probably left the city for the suburbs due to racial reasons.

Well, I used to live in a suburb around Detriot all my life until 2 years ago and so many people are going into suburbs because actually in Detriot there's a lot of violence so not very many people want to live there so they want to go to suburbs and feel safer. But the suburbs are getting my dangerous, a school in Rochester Hills, MI (a suburb around Detriot) got two bomb threats last year.

Have you been to Detroit lately?

The schools are in a pitiful state, the crime is rampant and the the greater part of the city is in decay. The only places with urban renewal are near the casinos which isnt the best place to be, with homeless hanging out by the entrences. I'll stay in the suburbs thanks.

P.S. I worked in downtown for 5 years. I was robbed once, had my car vandalized

School closing, crime and in actuality, i bet most of them are not leaving to go to the suburbs, but leaving Michigan overall, i just put two and two together, allot of unemployed people who made good money at onetime getting laid off, and another reason why i say this, because there are almost just as many foreclosed and up for sale houses in all the suburbs as well.

Crime and a Criminal "Hip Hop - Thug" Mayor top the list.
Also the police force is still corrupt and being investigated by the Feds. Over a Million people have left the city in the past 15 years (major loss of tax revenue). Schools SUCK ..... less than 30% of the HS students graduate. The list goes on and on .....

People have been consistently leaving the city of Detroit since the 60's/70's, and it has nothing to do with the auto industry, because a majority of the auto plants are located in the subarbs of Detroit.

School system sucks.

Mayor sucks

Downtown is extremely lame, unless there is a Tigers, Lions, or Wings game going on.

Just like any Downtown or big city, there are area's you just stay away from. I have felt more vulnerable in San Francisco, Chicago, Cleveland than I have in Detroit.

Probably because Detroit has a city tax.. an additional tax on top of federal and state.. and because people get tired of paying for the mayors lost lawsuits

Probably mostly crime, one reason so many fled St. Louis for a long time (though the population has increased a little bit in recent years).

Aren't unemployment rates awful high as well? And I hear the schools stink.
