I'm also, if my parents can't get it, a cheaper one

No, I'm not getting the 1000's...lol, my parents wouldn't trust me with it. And I'm not really spoiled, otherwise I'd have this computer, eh? Heck, if I was spoiled I wouldn't live in a appartment in MN

If they have the money, then why not?

You should ask for something that is less expensive, and then put the rest of the money away. In a few years you are going to be able to drive, so wouldn't you rather have a better car later than some computer that isn't even going to work in 3 years??

Just because you "ask" to get it for Christmas does not mean that you will definitely get it. I would think it would be "greedy" if you said that that's all you wanted for Christmas and if you didn't get it, your holiday would be ruined...sounds childish doesn't it?
When I was growing up and my family had little money, my brother and I would still ask for game consoles at Christmas...we wouldn't get them, but they still went on the list every year! It's what you "wish" to get, and everyone has those items on their personal wish lists that are always expensive. No one is obliged to get you anything at Christmas; it's personal choice. If your grandparents believe it will benefit you, then they may look into it; if they feel that you'd be better off with a less expensive gift, they'll work around that.

It's greedy to expect gifts from people. As a kid your parents and grandparents will 100% buy for you I'd imagine but really it is greedy to expect it. Even though your grandpa makes 200K a year doesn't mean that in retirement he will always be able to afford that kind of a gift.

You can put hints out that you need a new computer or that you saw a sweater that you really liked. However, Greed is in expecting and thinking you deserve it.

I wouldn't go to your parents of grandparents and say this is what I want.

I would have your parents look on ubid.com for a great computer that is a fraction of the cost, buy a couple of pieces of clothing and put the rest in an account.

I guess if it's selfish is relative to what type of lifestyle you live. I don't make that kind of money and would think it selfish if my son asked for it, but if your family has that kind of $ it changes the game a bit.

Save your $ though, it will benefit you in the future.

I really must edit this a bit. Ok, I don't think it's selfish to ask for it. My 12 yo asks every year for thousands of dollars worth of gifts and I don't think it's selfish because he doesn't expect them. That's when it would be selfish, if you expected it. It's normal for kids your age to ask for this stuff, and it's our responsibility as parents to get you what you deserve within our budget.

OK, I read all the answers above and I wanted to say that you shouldn't judge him for this. A computer is really useful for him right now. You can ask for it if your parents or grandparents can afford it, but you should think carefully if this is what you really want and if there are any sacrifices your parents have to make for it:). Anyway, Marry Christmas and enjoy your gifts, no matter what you will receive.

well i wouldnt say that its not greedy, but if this mac is something that your going to use for a long time and enjoy for 100-1000s of hours then it is a good purchase and present, especially if your grandfather has that much money and is willing to spend it on his grandchildren to spread their happiness, I got my laptop when I was 14 that Christmas and I have enjoyed it for 5 years now, so I say go for

Though don't EXPECT, to get it just cross your fingers for it

Skip the clothes. Stick within the budget and remember that Christmas is about giving, too.

Hope your wishes come true, at least the ones you deserve.

Happy Holidays.

Well if you get 1500 for Christmas and it's yours to spend as you please, then get the computer. If your gift is less than usual due to your grandfather's retirement, just accept it gracefully and figure out a way to either earn some money yourself or downsize your wish.
