The fruit was awesome. I guess my question would be...do I pick the fruit while it is on the tree now or do I wait and pick them up from the ground before eating them? I know that you usually pick apples and such from a tree...

Citrus fruit (especially grapefruit) do not ripen, or get sweeter, after they are picked. On the other hand they will not get less sweet after being picked. Grapefruit get sweeter the longer they stay on the tree. I know some people who do not enjoy grapefruit until at least January (they are being a little picky if you ask me). Fruit falling off of the tree now is probably stress induced, and a well cared for tree will hold its fruit until at least April.
I would not let a fallen fruit go to waste either, but the fruit on the tree should be every bit as good as the fallen fruit. There is some variation in ripeness between fruit on a tree. There are actually measurable slight differences in sweetness such as the bottom (blossom end) of the fruit is slightly sweeter than the top, and fruit on the south side of the tree may be slightly sweeter than in other locations.
Grapefruit are also more of a tropical fruit than are oranges. The hotter and more humid it is the sweeter the fruit. The best grapefruit I have eaten came from extreme south Florida, from groves on the Seminole Indian Reservation.

Apples are usually picked from the tree, to keep them from brusing when they hit the ground.....The grapefruits are good either way,,,,,,,,,I do hope you eat yours with a pinch of salt.......
