Vietnam was a republic that was invaded and controlled by the Japanese during WW II. However, there was a resistance, led by Ho Chi Minh. At the end of the war, the allies awarded Vietnam to the French, calling it French Indo-China. Ho then continued his resistance now to the French. In 1954, he ultimately defeated the French at the battle of Tien Bien Fu. The UN came in; the French were told to withdraw into the Southern sector and to be out of the country in two years, after which there were to be free elections with the intent of reuniting the two sections. During the two years, the US became alarmed at the spread of world communism, and there was fear that there was a viable communist plot to "take over the world". Fearing that if the Southern part of Vietnam became communist (Ho was quite communist) that eventually they would conquer Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand and (this was the watchword) "control the rice bowl." The US, contrary to the UN accords to which it had been a party, formed a puppet government under Diem, and began sending in military advisors to resist the North. This kept escalating until finally there was outright war, a war which many of us Americans who were young at the time saw as wrongful. There was widespread resistance and refusal to participate. Finally, in the Hawk vs Dove conflict about the war, here on the homefront, the Doves prevailed and America in effect stood up in the middle of the fight and said, "This is a wrong thing that we are doing here," and turned on its heel and left. It was one of our country's finest moments.
